How BabyGrade Scores Baby Food Quality

Every BabyGrade score is built from five weighted dimensions. Each dimension draws on published government data, peer-reviewed science, or established ingredient assessment frameworks. The result is a single 0–100 score, grouped into three bands, that reflects how a product performs across all five areas at once.

How BabyGrade handles contaminant data
The BabyGrade Score is an informational tool. It combines five categories of available evidence into a single 0–100 score with Good, Fair, and Poor bands so parents can compare baby food products more quickly. The score is not a lab certification, medical advice, or a guarantee that a product is free from contaminants.
The BabyGrade Score and the contaminant evidence tier answer different questions. The score summarizes the product using BabyGrade's scoring model. The evidence tier explains how much product-specific contaminant evidence is available.
Different products have different levels of contaminant evidence. Some have direct laboratory measurements. Many do not. Rather than hide that difference, BabyGrade displays contaminant evidence using four evidence tiers.
Product/brand measured
Direct laboratory measurements are available for the specific product, batch, or a defensibly matched product/brand record. This tier requires more than a source name. BabyGrade does not treat a manufacturer source, a test date, or a lab-related label as enough by itself.
Estimated from available brand/category data
Product-specific lab measurements are not available for this product. BabyGrade uses available brand, category, historical report, or related evidence to estimate the contaminant signal. An Estimated tier is not product-specific testing. It reflects what available evidence suggests, not what has been directly measured for the specific product.
Insufficient product-specific data
Available contaminant evidence is too limited, incomplete, or low-confidence to support a stronger product-specific interpretation. When this happens, BabyGrade labels the limitation instead of implying certainty.
The caveat used in the app is:
“Insufficient product-specific contaminant data.”
Out of scope
Some products are outside BabyGrade's scoring scope. This may include fresh produce, adult products, or product types the BabyGrade model does not currently evaluate.
A favorable BabyGrade grade is not contaminant clearance. It means the product scored favorably under the BabyGrade model using the evidence available to BabyGrade. It does not certify what is in the specific jar, pouch, or container a parent is holding.
When BabyGrade suggests alternatives, those suggestions also depend on available evidence. Contaminant evidence may be measured, estimated, incomplete, or unavailable depending on the product. Alternatives should not be read as proof that one product has been tested more directly than another unless BabyGrade clearly says so.
BabyGrade aims to be clear about what it knows, what it estimates, and what remains unknown. If a parent has specific concerns about contaminant exposure for their child, those concerns are best discussed with a healthcare provider who can consider the child's individual circumstances.
The Five Scoring Dimensions
1. Contaminant Levels
The highest-weight dimension. BabyGrade compares known or inferred heavy metal levels against published reference values where they exist: FDA Closer to Zero action levels for lead in baby foods, the FDA action level for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal, and EU Regulation 2023/915 reference values for cadmium and arsenic. The FDA has not published action levels for cadmium or mercury in baby food. Ingredient categories with documented high contamination rates in FDA market studies (rice, root vegetables, sweet potatoes, and similar crops) are flagged even when no lab test is on file. Products with multiple such ingredients in primary positions receive lower contaminant scores.

BabyGrade also labels the evidence behind contaminant information. A product's contaminant evidence may be measured, estimated, insufficient, or out of scope.
2. Ingredient Quality
BabyGrade evaluates the quality tier of each ingredient on the label. Whole, minimally processed ingredients (organic purees, single-ingredient meats, whole grains) score well. Refined, fractionated, or low-nutrient inputs (rice starch, corn syrup solids, maltodextrin, fruit juice concentrates used as sweeteners) lower the score. The position of each ingredient matters: ingredients near the top of the label have more influence because labels are ordered by weight.

3. Additive Concern
BabyGrade checks every ingredient against a curated list of additives with documented developmental or safety concerns for infants. This includes artificial colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6), synthetic preservatives (sodium benzoate, BHA, BHT), carrageenan, nitrates from curing agents, and carboxymethylcellulose. Natural flavors receive a minor flag because the label term hides dozens of possible compounds. No additive automatically fails a product; the score reflects the number and severity of flagged additives in context.

4. Processing Burden
BabyGrade applies a simplified version of the NOVA food processing classification to each product. NOVA 1 and 2 products (whole or minimally processed foods) score well. NOVA 4 ultra-processed products (those built from industrial ingredients, with multiple emulsifiers, flavors, or stabilizers) score lower. For most baby foods, this dimension captures the difference between a single-ingredient fruit pouch and a shelf-stable snack built from multiple refined inputs.

5. Sweetening Burden
Added sugars and high-glycemic sweeteners in early infant feeding are associated with preference formation for sweet tastes and excess caloric intake. BabyGrade flags products that contain added sugars (cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, agave, coconut sugar), fruit juice concentrates used as sweeteners, and high-glycemic starches (tapioca, rice flour) in prominent label positions. Naturally occurring fruit sugars in whole fruit purees are not penalized.
